Guiding Question: In a culture where we are bombarded with ideas and images of “what we should be”, how does one form an identity that remains true and authentic for her/himself?

Mini-Lesson:
Review Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom

Mandela describes his understanding of freedom during his lifetime. How does Mandela's point of view, at different times of his life, affected his understanding of freedom?
Analyze the interactions between individuals, events, and ideas in a text (e.g., how ideas influence individuals or events, or how individuals influence ideas or events).

Using the Graphic Organizer, trace how Ponyboy/Jonas has formed his identity over the course of the text.
